HANGZHOU - Qatar’s flag was raised at the Games Village of the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou on Thursday in the presence of His Excellency Dr Thani bin Abdulrahman Al Kuwari, Second Vice-President of the Qatar Olympic Committee (QOC) and His Excellency Jassim bin Rashid Al Buainain, Secretary-General of the Qatar Olympic Committee, and Rashid Adiba, Head of the Administrative Delegation of Qatar, and a number of officials and representatives of QOC and sports federations at the Hangzhou Asian Games 2022.
The national anthem of the State of Qatar was played during the flag-raising ceremony. Rashid Adiba, head of the administrative delegation, exchanged shields with a representative of the organizing committee. The event included festive performances and carnival activities which were attended by officials of the Qatar Olympic Committee and a number of Qatari athletes participating at the Games.
Following the flag-raising ceremony, the Secretary-General of the Qatar Olympic Committee visited the athletes’ village and held a session with a number of Qatari athletes, urging them to make every effort to present an honourable image of Qatari sports in this major Asian forum and wishing them success. The Games officially begin on Saturday (September 23).
Rashid Adiba, head of the Qatar’s administrative delegation confirmed that the Al Adam champions are ready to compete in the competitions amid aspirations to provide a distinguished level.
The head of the delegation during the event of raising the Qatari flag at the Games Village, said: “The Asian Games are considered as the second largest gathering of athletes in the world and this edition in China is considered one of the largest gatherings of the Asian Games. We are confident in our athletes putting up a good show.
He added: “The Olympic Committee has been keen during the recent period to work on its strategy in cooperation with the national federations to participate in the Games. Qatar is participating with more than 183 male and female athletes competing across 27 disciplines. We hope that our athletes will give their best.”
Regarding the organizational aspects of Asiad 2022, he said: “We praise China for their efforts to organize the Games, which were postponed last year. This is certainly additional work for the organizers and we have witnessed great cooperation since our arrival in the city of Hangzhou, which hosts 80 % of the competitions. We found that all procedures were facilitated for all participating delegations in addition to the readiness of the facilities as well as the sports village in which we reside, which is considered at the highest level and represents a legacy of this Asian tournament.”
Meanwhile, Qatar’s shooting team arrived at the Games on Thursday. Shooting events begin on Sunday and continue till October 1. Qatar’s shooting athletes are one of the most prominent teams expected to win medals at the Hangzhou Games.
In sailing, Qatar’s Faris Al Bakri, achieved tenth place in the first race and 12th place in the second race, while Ahmed Al Mulla achieved ninth place in the first race and tenth place in the second race. .
It is worth noting that the results of sailing are calculated on the last day of the races and depend mainly on the wind and sea currents, and the duo of the Qatar sailing team is looking forward to giving their best in Friday’s races to obtain the best position.
Qatar’s athletes are participating in 27 disciplines including archery, athletics, basketball, boxing, chess, cycling, esports, equestrian, football, fencing, gymnastics, golf, handball, jiu-jitsu karate, sailing, squash, swimming, tennis, taekwondo, triathlon, table tennis, volleyball, 3×3 basketball, beach volleyball and weightlifting.
